The Catalan giants couldn’t remove Messi’s shirt when his decision to join PSG because PSG’s Spanish FA’s rules for players require LaLiga teams to give their 25-man squad with numbers 1-25.

So, Barcelona made the decision to give it to a different alumni of the club’s famous La Masia academy instead.

The shirt was worn during Barcelona’s win against Levante, Fati – who changed between No. 17 and number 10 said he was confident rather than anxious when wearing the shirt.

He added: “It’s not an act of pressure. I am very proud to wear the number 10 following Leo. I am pleased with my captain and club for this opportunity.’

Barcelona issued a announcement at the beginning of the month, stating the reasons why “record breaker” Fati was the ideal player to take over Messi’s shoes.

“Ansu Fati has a brand new number for his shirt. In addition to the number 22, and then No 17 Ansu Fati, the 21-year old Barca striker will be proudly sporting No 10 on his shirt. It is an iconic jersey worn by legends like Leo Messi, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo in the announcement reads.

“Despite only being 18 years old as he continues to recover from an injury, Ansu Fati forms part of Barca’s past as a record-breaking player as well as with the Spanish national team.

Since his debut in August of 2019 the player has set record-breaking records for the League as well as the Champions League.

Just six days after making his debut in the first team, he became the youngest soccer player in league play at FC Barcelona. He’s a record-breaker who will wear the legendary number 10 jersey.’

The No 10 shirt worn by Barcelona has a lot of weight having previously used by Diego Maradona, Pep Guardiola, Romario, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho.

But, Fati has shown he is worthy of the title by scoring in his return back to the field on Saturday.

Fati has been recuperating from a knee injury he suffered in a game in a match against Real Betis back in November 2020.

But, he was back in action after missing 10 months after being on the bench during the 82 minute interval to score a stunning strike in the Catalans 3-1 win against Levante.

The player grabbed the ball from midfield , and he sprinted forward and sped past several Levante defenses. He then unleashed an incredible shot from 20 meters away to win the match.

When asked about his goal, Fait said: ‘I had no idea I could win as impressive as this. I am delighted with the win, but there’s still a long way travel.

“Thanks to my doctors and physiotherapists who have been there for me.

“I am glad to assist the team and my family members who are struggling these past months. I am extremely thankful to everyone.’
